Discussion on Calling Party Number (CPN)

This is a revised version of the document. The original was sent the same day.

Introduction

The proposed draft revisions to the ITRs have been drawing much discussion on the use of Calling Party Number (CPN) as a way to determine the origin of a call, or to trace the route taken by a call, for the purpose of knowing the identity of the calling party, to facilitate investigation into any loss in billing/settlements, etc.

This contribution aims to shed some light on technical aspects, limitations, and capabilities associated with CPN in today’s telecommunications environment, and assist the CWG-WCIT in its deliberations on the topic.
