Mission/purpose:

The TLD is intended to benefit Internet users by enabling Hyundai Motor Company (hereinafter referred to as ʺThe Companyʺ) to communicate more easily and effectively with all Internet users, and particularly with The Companyʹs numerous customers, employees and affiliates. The TLD will become a supporting branding, technology and services platform for The Companyʹs mission and its businesses.

The Company is a long established and well-known multinational corporation, with a history spanning more than 45 years. It was founded in 1967 and its headquarters are located in Seoul, Korea. The Company is a member of Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, a group comprised of 55 affiliates. The Company itself, along with its own subsidiaries, undertakes its business in over 160 countries with a total workforce of 57,105 employees (as of December 31, 2011, consolidated basis).

The Company is considered to be one of the leading companies in the production and sale of motor vehicles. The net sales for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2011 were up to KRW77,797,895,000,000 (consolidated basis).

The Company has established a long-term, sustainable vision for the development of its business and its strong internet presence, along with technologies such as the World Wide Web and email, are central to this development. This is also reflected by the Company’s domain portfolio, of over 867 domains, among which more than several hundred are registered by overseas manufacture⁄sales companies. The Company envisions that the .HYUNDAI TLD and the domain names registered under it will provide a great opportunity to interact online with current and potential customers and stakeholders.

The brand ʺHYUNDAIʺ is the name of the company itself and is a well-known multinational corporate brand. The Company has registered this corporate brand in up to 160 countries and⁄or trademark jurisdictional regions. This corporate brand serves to clearly remind general customers of the companyʹs goods and services.

The .HYUNDAI Registry will provide an Internet space, under the control of The Company, to allow for the distribution and exchange of information among The Company and its stakeholders by means of, but not limited to, websites, social networks, email and other technologies that will reside within the .HYUNDAI domain name space. In addition, ancillary services may be provided in relation to registration of domains within the TLD, including but not limited to website hosting, SEO, marketing and consulting services.

The Company initially intends to reserve all names within the TLD for itself, and to primarily use any of those domain names for promotional and navigational purposes relating to The Companyʹs online presence and⁄or provision of goods and services.

Eventually, though not likely for at least three years post-delegation, The Company anticipates the possibility that Affiliates could license the use of domains within the TLD from The Company. However, such licenses could only be made via contract which limits the use of the domain name to purposes specified by The Company. Such terms would be enforced via monitoring and quick action to mitigate any negative effects of any such abuse, if any. Licenses of the domain names could be revoked by The Company at any time, for any reason.

Explain any cost benefits for registrants you intend to implement (e.g., advantageous pricing, introductory discounts, bulk registration discounts).
Do you intend to make contractual commitments to registrants regarding the magnitude of price escalation?
The Company will be the sole registrant of all domains in the TLD, in the interests of Internet users who wish to interact or communicate with The Company. There will be cost benefits to those users, via easier navigation and more trustworthy interaction with The Company. They should intuitively come to know and use .HYUNDAI domain names to directly navigate to their intended destination. Search engines may be needed less, lowering consumers’ time to get where they wish to go. Once they get there, they will have enhanced confidence that they are dealing directly with The Company or its Affiliates.

Geographic

Protections:

We have engaged ARI Registry Services (ARI) to deliver services for this TLD. This response describes protection of geographic names as implemented by ARI.

1 PROTECTION OF GEOGRAPHIC NAMES

In accordance with Specification 5 of the New gTLD Registry Agreement, the registry operator must initially reserve all geographic names at the second level, and at all other levels within the TLD at which the registry operator provides for registrations.

ARI will support this requirement by using the following internationally recognised lists to develop a comprehensive master list of all geographic names that will be initially reserved:
– The 2-letter alpha-2 code of all country and territory names contained on the ISO 3166-1 list, including all reserved and unassigned codes [http:⁄⁄www.iso.org⁄iso⁄support⁄country_codes⁄iso_3166_code_lists⁄iso-3166-1_decoding_table.htm].
– The short form (in English) of all country and territory names contained on the ISO 3166-1 list, including the European Union, which is exceptionally reserved on the ISO 3166-1 List, and its scope extended in August 1999 to any application needing to represent the name European Union [http:⁄⁄www.iso.org⁄iso⁄support⁄country_codes⁄iso_3166_code_lists⁄iso-3166-1_decoding_table.htm#EU].
– The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, Technical Reference Manual for the Standardisation of Geographical Names, Part III Names of Countries of the World. This lists the names of 193 independent States generally recognised by the international community in the language or languages used in an official capacity within each country and is current as of August 2006 [http:⁄⁄unstats.un.org⁄unsd⁄geoinfo⁄ungegn%20tech%20ref%20manual_M87_combined.pdf].
– The list of UN member states in six official UN languages prepared by the Working Group on Country Names of the United Nations Conference on the standardisation of Geographical Names [http:⁄⁄unstats.un.org⁄unsd⁄geoinfo⁄UNGEGN⁄docs⁄9th-uncsgn-docs⁄econf⁄9th_UNCSGN_e-conf-98-89-add1.pdf].

Names on this reserved list in ARI’s registry system registry will be prevented from registration, unless and until any such names are released from reservation per The Company’s release procedures generally described below.

A corresponding list of geographic names will be made available to the public via the registry operators website, to inform Registrars and potential registrants of reserved names. The lists noted above, will be regularly monitored for revisions and the reserved list, both within the registry and publicly facing, will continually be updated to reflect any changes.

In addition to these requirements, ARI are able to support the wishes of The Company in regards to the reservation of additional terms on a case by case basis. ARI’ managed TLD registry allows such additions to the reserved list to be made by appropriately authorized staff, with no further system development changes required.

The following applies to all Domain Names contained within the registry’s reserved list:
– Attempts to register listed Domain Names will be rejected.
– WhoIs queries for listed Domain Names will receive responses indicating their reserved status.
– Reserved geographic names will not appear in the TLD zone file.
– DNS queries for reserved domain names will result in an NXDOMAIN response.

2 PROCEDURES FOR RELEASE

We understand that if and when The Company wishes to release any reserved names at a later date, this will require further approval from ICANN.
In order to release reserved names, The Company will have in place a special release mechanism, described below.
Consistent with the .info release of geographic names, as referenced in the New GTLD Application, The Company will present the GAC Representatives with an option, at no charge, of objecting to release and use of any initially reserved names at the second level. However, as further detailed below, since such names will be used for the purposes of the representation of the Companyʹs brandname, it is almost impossible to anticipate any abuse or misconduct. Thus The Company reasonably believes that very few GAC Representatives, if any, would exercise this option. Nevertheless, the at-no-charge objection will remain an option for the GAC Representatives, in compliance with current ICANN requirements regarding geographic reserved names.
Generally, it is extremely unlikely that The Companyʹs authorized use of any countryname.HYUNDAI or cc.HYUNDAI domain name could be confusing to users, or otherwise offensive to any country. To the extent that use of any .HYUNDAI domain was ever deemed confusing or offensive, The Company is likely to have a strong desire to resolve the situation quickly and respectfully to any affected country’s sovereign interests. At minimum, The Company will ensure that its designated abuse contact is aware of the additional sensitivities that may potentially arise with respect to use of cc.HYUNDAI or countryname.HYUNDAI domains, such that any complaints of this nature are prioritized accordingly.
